Service Description
This beginner-friendly workshop introduces students to the craft of sewing and kite construction. Participants will learn sewing machine basics, materials handling, and the techniques required to create and assemble their own flyable kites. The course culminates in a group flight session where students will launch their completed kites and practice tuning them for flight. Session 1 – Getting Started with Kite Sewing (Week 1, Thursday) Welcome, introductions, and course overview History of kites and sewn kites Materials overview: ripstop nylon, thread, spars, and fittings Sewing machine orientation and safety Hands-on practice: threading, straight seams on scrap fabric Assignment: practice sewing seams at home (if possible) Session 2 – Cutting and Sewing the Sail (Week 2, Thursday) Reading simple kite templates and patterns Cutting ripstop panels accurately Sewing panels together (flat-felled or French seams) Reinforcing stress points Begin assembling each student’s kite sail Session 3 – Framing and Finishing (Week 3, Thursday) Sewing pockets for spars and attachment points Introduction to bridles and tails Installing the frame and connecting the sail Adding decoration (simple appliqué, colored panels) Preparing kites for flight
